Basic Restaurant Conversations

This post introduce the japanese you would need going to restaurants. The usual flow of the restaurant:

Get to the restaurant → Sit down → Order Drinks → Order Food → Pay

They will always ask you to order drinks first, then food.

When you arrived at restaurant, usually they will smile, and say:

いらっしゃいませ1 / ウェルカム
Welcome

Staff maybe busy and tell you:

しょうしょうお待(ま)ちください
Please wait a moment.

If they are not taking care of you, you could get staff attention by saying:

すみません / すいません
Excuse me

They will show up with:

お待(ま)たせしました / お待(ま)たせいたしました2
Sorry for waiting

When you say anything to the staff, their usual replies:

かしこまりました / 承知(しょうち)しました
Certainly, absolutely, For sure (in very polite way)

When staff ask what do you want to drink:

  • お飲み物はどうされますか
  • 早速ですが、お飲み物はどうしますか

〇〇をおまかせでお願いします

Q: ご予約(よやく)はされていますか？3
Do you have a reservation?

NO:
A: ない / されてないです
I dont have a reservation.

If you have to wait:

こちらに並(なら)んでください
Please queue here.

列の後ろに並んでください。
Please follow the line.

５０分ほどでお席(せき)にご案内(あんない)できます。4
Tables will be available in 50 minutes.

If the restaurant is full:

申(もう)し訳(わけ)ございません
Apologies

満席(まんせき)です
We are full.

ただいま満席(まんせき)でございます
We are full now.

今日一杯(いっぱい)なんですー
Today is very busy.

予約(よやく)が一杯(いっぱい)ですね
Full with reservations.

If you They may thank you for coming:

お越(こ)し頂(いただ)きありがとうございました。
Thanks for coming.

They may try to retent you by saying:

またのご利用(りよう)をお待(ま)ちしております。
Looking forward to your next visit.

YES:
A: はい
I had a reservation.

If you had reservation and still waiting, they will call you by:

ご予約(よやく)の Amily さまでいらっしゃいますか？
Is Amily (who has a reservation) here?

何名(なんめい)様(さま)ですか？
何名様でいらっしゃいますか？
How many people?

You can reply or use your fingers:

ひとり / ふたり / さんにん / よにん / ごにん です
1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 people

ろくにん / ななにん / はちにん / きゅうにん / じゅうにん です
6 / 7 / 8 / 9 / 10 people

If you said ふたりです, they usually confirm again:

２名様でよろしいですか？
Is 2 people right?

Unfortunately, many restaurants in Japan you could still smoke, so you get this question a lot:

おタバコは吸(す)われますか？5
Do you smoke?

Or they may ask in this way:

禁煙席(きんえんせき)と喫煙席(きつえんせき)どちらがよろしいですか?
Non-smoking & Smoking, which one do you prefer?

You can ask for a (non)smoking seats by:

Non-smoking / Smoking seat

お荷物をお預(あず)かりいたします6
I will take your luggage.

They will bring you to the seat and say:

こちらへどうぞ
This way please

一名(いちめい)様(さま)御(ご)来店(らいてん)です。
A customer is here.

おせきごあんないします
席にご案内(あんない)致(いた)します
Let me bring you to the seat.

奥(おく)のお席(せき)へどうぞ
The seat in the end please.

When there is a step on the way:

階段(かいだん)を気(き)を付(つ)けてください。
Please careful of the step.

こちらに段差(だんさ)がございます、お気(き)を付(つ)け下さい
Here has a difference in level, please be careful.

お絞(しぼ)り Towel
冷(つめ)たい / おしぼり Cold Towel
温(あたた)かい / 暖(あたた)かい / おしぼり Hot Towel

When you sit down they will say:

お決(き)まりましたら、呼(よ)んでください7
ご注文がお決(き)まりになりましたら、お呼(よ)びください
お決(き)まりになりましたら、お声(こえ)かけください
When you decided, please call me.

If you did not find menu on the table:

メニュー / ドリンクメニュー
Menu / Drinks Menu

英語(えいご)のメニューはありますか？
Do you have English Menu?

They usually brought you the cold water by default and say:

お水(みず) / お冷(ひ)や お待(ま)ちしました
I brought water

When you decided your drinks, and got their attention, they will say:

伺(うかが)います
(They saw you) I will take your order.

Is different when they come to you:

うかがいましょうか？
Are you ready to order?

or

お決(き)まりですか？
Have you decided?

ごちゅうもんはおきまりでしょうか？
Have you decided yet?

Thing ＋を　お願(ねが)いします/ください

お冷やをお願(ねが)いします
Water please.

In cafe serves food / Italian / French, they may ask you if you want your non alchoholic drinks after:

If you want your drinks with the meal together:

During the meal, the staff may clean up your table and say:

There are interesting ways to say you want to go to the bathroom:

お花を摘み / キジ撃ち に行ってきます

おあいそう - used in sushi restaurants
All means bill.

You can also make a cross by your index fingers to mean "check".
